Grant’s victory at Vicksburg in July of 1863 split the Confederacy in two, secured the Mississippi River, and as much or more than the Battle of Gettysburg, turned the tide of the war to the Union. Grant was made commander of all Union armies in 1864 and served through the end of the war in that capacity. He proved to be the only Union commander able to decisively defeat Robert E. Lee. Very shortly after his appointment to command Grant relentlessly pursued Lee through the Battles of the Wilderness Campaign, through the siege at Petersburg and to the final surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House in April of 1865. Grant was elected eighteenth president of the United States.
